NC State University Ethics Program : Welcome

News Focus

  • Please join us!  Announcing a new international virtual meeting space for everyone interested in moral issues surrounding research:  the OpenSeminar in Research Ethics online community.  Give it a try at:  http://dhill-8218-1.lib.ncsu.edu/dolphin/

The mission of our program is to provide ethics education for NC State’s researchers. Our primary audience includes graduate students and faculty. Because ethical questions inevitably arise whenever research involves harm or potential harm to humans, animals, or the environment, the Research & Professional Ethics Program pays close attention to these areas.

Each fall and spring semester we sponsor a one-credit course for graduate students, PHI 816, “Introduction to Research Ethics,” taught by Dr. Gary Comstock, program director and professor of philosophy. Our website offers news, events, resource links, and a blog for those who would like anonymously to discuss or ask questions about research issues. Our goal is to be a resource for all wanting to proceed responsibly and with integrity in areas where the right course of action is not always immediately clear.

Finally, we are the home of a major initiative funded by the National Science Foundation called “A Model Curriculum for Land Grant Universities in Research Ethics” (LANGURE). LANGURE is a national network of eight land grant and historically black universities plus a private corporation: NC State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Iowa State, Hawaii, NC A&T, Fayetteville State, and NC Central. The team consists of more than one hundred faculty and graduate students developing a model curriculum in research ethics for doctoral candidates in engineering and the physical, social and life sciences.

NCSU Research Ethics Program Seminar Series

We also provide a seminar series for students, faculty and the public. Seminars introduce ethical theory and methods, present information about graduate student and faculty responsibilities, discuss the philosophical foundations of the professions, and explain relevant university policies and regulations. With other departments we co-sponsor a diverse group of speakers from industry and government as well as from other universities. We also sponsor one-day workshops for departments and online interactive modules to assist researchers thinking through sensitive matters.
